💡Why She’s in Power?: The mission, vision, and values of She’s in Power as an organization get to the very core of my own personal efforts to mentor and uplift underrepresented and deserving individuals in the field where I have made my own career. Aside from my own Ph.D., I am most proud of the young women in renewable energy fields whose careers I’ve impacted as a mentor. We lead by example, and She’s in Power is an excellent example of empowerment by walking beside those we seek to empower.

How much time do you take each week to advance others on your team or in your sphere?
Mentoring includes sponsoring and advocating for other women. JPMorgan Chase launched its 30-5-1 campaign internally to promote advancement of women:
☕️Spend 30 minutes a week having coffee with a talented up and coming woman.
🏆Spend 5 minutes a week congratulating a female colleague on a win or success.
🎉Spend 1 minute a week talking up the woman who had that win to other colleagues around the firm.
Can you take 36 minutes this week?

Field-trip highlight! 💥 This week some of the Field-trip highlight! 💥

This week some of the SiP Spark interns were able to tour the CSU Powerhouse, home to the CSU Energy Institute and one of the largest university energy research facilities in the world. Topics of research include energy generation, air quality, engine efficiency, policy, and human behavior’s effect on energy use.

Sparks came in with backgrounds in natural resource economics, sustainable interior design, and environmental community outreach. Each topic was discussed and somehow related to a function or service of the Powerhouse, in addition to many new subjects touched on such as engine energy efficiency testing!

Stay tuned for more program field trips where Sparks learn about local initiatives to increase clean energy use as well as learn about opportunities to become involved.

How has Fort Collins power generation become clean How has Fort Collins power generation become cleaner since the Great Depression? 🏭

The Powerhouse, which is also the headquarters of the CSU Energy Institute, is an excellent example.

Originally the building was the coal powered Fort Collins Municipal Power Plant. The building was constructed in response to the financial hardships of the 1930s and the city’s need for low-cost energy. After almost a century, the building has been expanded and is one of the largest university energy research facilities in the world. Today, 100,000 square feet of platinum level LEED certified space is used for research among clean and sustainable energy topics.
