Inspiring girls and women to be tomorrow’s clean energy leaders through hands-on learning projects in Northern Colorado.

She’s in Power
Join us in celebrating National Mentoring Month – a time to recommit to one another as a community and to consider how we can better support, encourage, and build relationships through mentoring. The She’s in Power hands-on mentorship program is designed to grow and inspire the women who will be tomorrow’s clean energy leaders.

Meet She's in Power Board Member, Barbara Hughes!

Ph.D., VP of Energy Storage, Forge Nano
Dr. Hughes is a leading expert in the synthesis and characterization of next-gen materials for energy conversion and energy storage.

💡Why She’s in Power?: The mission, vision, and values of She’s in Power as an organization get to the very core of my own personal efforts to mentor and uplift underrepresented and deserving individuals in the field where I have made my own career. Aside from my own Ph.D., I am most proud of the young women in renewable energy fields whose careers I’ve impacted as a mentor. We lead by example, and She’s in Power is an excellent example of empowerment by walking beside those we seek to empower.

How much time do you take each week to advance others on your team or in your sphere?
Mentoring includes sponsoring and advocating for other women. JPMorgan Chase launched its 30-5-1 campaign internally to promote advancement of women:
☕️Spend 30 minutes a week having coffee with a talented up and coming woman.
🏆Spend 5 minutes a week congratulating a female colleague on a win or success.
🎉Spend 1 minute a week talking up the woman who had that win to other colleagues around the firm.
Can you take 36 minutes this week?

Field-trip highlight! 💥 This week some of the Field-trip highlight! 💥

This week some of the SiP Spark interns were able to tour the CSU Powerhouse, home to the CSU Energy Institute and one of the largest university energy research facilities in the world. Topics of research include energy generation, air quality, engine efficiency, policy, and human behavior’s effect on energy use.

Sparks came in with backgrounds in natural resource economics, sustainable interior design, and environmental community outreach. Each topic was discussed and somehow related to a function or service of the Powerhouse, in addition to many new subjects touched on such as engine energy efficiency testing!

Stay tuned for more program field trips where Sparks learn about local initiatives to increase clean energy use as well as learn about opportunities to become involved.

How has Fort Collins power generation become clean How has Fort Collins power generation become cleaner since the Great Depression? 🏭

The Powerhouse, which is also the headquarters of the CSU Energy Institute, is an excellent example.

Originally the building was the coal powered Fort Collins Municipal Power Plant. The building was constructed in response to the financial hardships of the 1930s and the city’s need for low-cost energy. After almost a century, the building has been expanded and is one of the largest university energy research facilities in the world. Today, 100,000 square feet of platinum level LEED certified space is used for research among clean and sustainable energy topics.

Why is there a need for sustainable emergency housing designs?
Global climate change is resulting in the increased rate of extreme weather events, such as hurricanes and tornados. ⛈

This summer and fall our Power Partners at the CSU Institute for the Built Environment have been working with our Spark Sarah Brown to create emergency housing for natural disaster recovery by utilizing old shipping containers. 🧰

Project Highlight 🏠

Our Spark Sarah Brown has been working with the Institute for the Built Environment (IBE) at CSU to create a modular configuration that could be marketed as emergency housing for natural disaster recovery. Additional applications include wellness villages at rural hospitals and back-yard accessory dwelling units for seniors (“granny-flats”).

The IBE at CSU specializes in guiding project teams to realize their potential for creating prosperous, healthy, and environmentally responsive buildings through a systems perspective.

Stay tuned for design progress and more SiP project updates!

Today’s technology: Agrivoltaics. You’ve heard of photovoltaics, but have you heard about combining PV with agriculture? Agrivoltaics combine agricultural land use with the production of renewable photovoltaic electricity. It allows for the simultaneous production of food crops and electricity generation. 🌱

Benefits: Beyond extremely efficient land use, agrivoltaics create a symbiotic relationship between panels shading crops and plant transpiration cooling solar panels, thus maximizing energy generation efficiency.

Spark Spotlight! 🌲 Sienna has recently comple Spark Spotlight! 🌲

Sienna has recently completed her degree in Ecosystem Science and Sustainability with a minor in Sustainable Energy at Colorado State University, and is now starting her masters at UC Davis in Energy Systems. This summer she worked with @fortcollinshabitat to create opportunities for homeowner feedback related to solar energy at the newly built affordable housing development Harmony Cottages. The broader goal of the project was to ensure that photovoltaic (PV) solar systems are installed on all future homes at the Fort Collins site – at no cost to the homeowner. 🏠

“This was one of the first experiences I’ve had in this field, and I thought it was amazing how equally I was treated to other colleagues working on the project. The experience provided me with the confidence to work with a diverse group of people and feel adequate to contribute to a project.”

Alyssa was one of our Sparks this summer & partnered with Tom Hickey @sandboxsolar to set a general framework for solar education outreach to local organizations around Fort Collins. Alyssa is a 4th year student at CSU studying environmental public health, Spanish language, and global environmental sustainability. She is interested in the connection between sustainability and public health through the lens of community education. 📚

“I am so grateful for the opportunity to be mentored by such strong women, connected with inspiring community leaders, and to brainstorm how to educate the future clean energy workforce.”
